When You Really Need to Call For AC Repair

There are some instances where it might make sense to wait to call for AC repairs–like if you’re planning on replacing your system before the temperatures warm up too much, or if you already have maintenance scheduled to get a comprehensive idea of what repairs are most necessary.

But if you haven’t had maintenance done in the last year and have no idea what the status of your air conditioner’s efficiency and efficacy is, or if it will be able to reliably keep you cool this summer, then the time to call for AC repair is now. This is especially true if your air conditioner is currently exhibiting any of the following symptoms.

Short-Cycling

Have you noticed that your air conditioning system cycles on, runs for a little while, stops, and then starts up again? This is what’s known as “short-cycling” and it is both the symptom of an existing problem, plus it can cause further issues for your cooling system.

Central air conditioners are designed to run in 15-minute increments, 2-3 times an hour. If your system isn’t doing this, then it is time to give us a call.

Humidity Problems

Let’s say you have a dehumidifier included with your air conditioning system. Assuming this system is operational and you’re using your humidistat as you should be, then you shouldn’t have any problems right?

If you notice increased humidity despite using this system, it may be a problem with your air conditioner. The condensate drain or pan may have a leak, or moisture may have gotten into your ductwork through a tear or pinhole leak.

If you notice this in combination with a musty smell, it’s definitely a sign you need to give our team a call.

Strange Noises

Nobody knows better than you and the other people living in your household what sounds your air conditioner makes on a daily basis. If you notice that the noises coming from your unit are unusual compared to what you usually hear, then, you guessed it, call us!

These noises might include screeching or squealing, potentially indicating a motor problem. Or you might detect banging or clanging, indicating a loose part. Last but not least, you might hear a hissing or bubbling sound–this is likely the sign of a refrigerant leak, which can render your compressor useless if not managed right away.

Higher Than Average Utility Bills

When you go to pay your utilities this month, really pay attention to the amount on your electrical bill. Is it dramatically higher than it was at this same time last year? This is a sign that something in your home is working inefficiently, and it could very well be your air conditioner to blame.

After all, your HVAC systems account for half of your home’s entire energy consumption! If you can do anything to bring the cost of energy down in your home, staying on top of HVAC repair needs should be at the top of your list.
