Indoor Air Quality in Hagerstown, MD
Serving Franklin and Washington Counties
Poor indoor air quality can cause many problems in a house: headaches, nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath. And those are only the effects from basic airborne pollutants like dust, dander, and pollen. There are many more harmful contaminants inside homes, and these can include bacteria, mold spores, formaldehyde, smoke, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This is more common than you might think—poor indoor air quality is a major problem throughout the country because of how little fresh air circulation homes experience.
Premier HVAC Services offers indoor air quality services as part of our other heating and air conditioning services to Hagerstown, MD and throughout South-Central Pennsylvania. Air Quality Systems Include Air Filters and Air Purifiers
The two commonest ways to remove unwanted pollutants from household air is to install air filters and air purifiers into the HVAC system. Air filters use mesh to trap larger particles in the airflow from passing through. (These filters are different from the air filter that comes with an HVAC system, which is there to protect the AC and furnace, not the air quality.) Air purifiers are electrically powered systems that use ionization or ultraviolet radiation to eliminate the smaller particles that can escape through filters, such as chemicals, smoke, bacteria, and more.
The Importance of Balanced Humidity
When air in a home is too dry or too humid, it has a negative effect on comfort. High humidity in hot weather makes the weather feel hotter, while low humidity in cold weather gives a sharper edge to the cold. Imbalanced humidity causes other problems, such as making it easier for illnesses to spread through a household and causing damage to building materials.
The ideal humidity balance is around 45% relative humidity, and the way to find that balance is with whole-house dehumidifiers and humidifiers. You may need one or the other or both, and our ventilation experts can install them into your HVAC system.
Considering Heat and Energy Recovery Ventilators
We mentioned that one of the reasons homes have poor indoor air quality is a lack of indoor air circulation. There are air quality systems called energy recovery ventilators (ERV) and heat recovery ventilators (HRV) that allow fresh outdoor air into a house without also bringing in extreme outdoor temperatures. The systems pre-cool or pre-heat the fresh air using energy already used to run the home’s HVAC system—and that means better quality air without seeing heating and cooling bills skyrocket.
